Save Your Tooth with Root Canal Therapy in Raleigh, NC
What is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy, or simply “root canal”, is a procedure that removes the pulp of an infected or damaged tooth. The dental pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth. It is composed of blood vessels, fibers, and neurons.
Deep tooth decay is the most common cause of pulp damage, leading to internal infection and inflammation. Gum disease, trauma, fissures, excessive wear, and leaky fillings can also bring on infections. Root canal therapy can treat the infection in the pulp and surrounding tissues.
What to Expect During Root Canal Therapy
During root canal treatment, Dr. Chi removes the infected pulp and the damaged nerve. To access these areas, she either removes the decayed part of the tooth or drills a tiny hole in the top of the tooth. After a thorough cleaning, the tooth is sealed with a filling to allow the area to heal. To protect the tooth from further damage, Dr. Chi might also recommend a dental crown.
When Is a Root Canal Necessary?
When a tooth’s pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to extensive decay, a chip, a crack, or an injury, a root canal therapy is required. Below are the symptoms that indicate the need for a root canal:
- Pain: Sharp, shooting sensations that don’t go away or excruciating discomfort when biting or chewing.
- Sensitivity: The ability to feel warmth or cold long after the stimulus.
- Swelling: Gums that are sensitive or swollen, or an abscess (pimple) on the gums.
- Discoloration: A tooth that has darkened or become discolored may indicate interior tissue injury or extensive decay.
- Chips or cracks: An obvious chip or crack in the teeth.
- Loose Tooth: A tooth that moves or feels loose.
