Gentle Tooth Extractions in Raleigh, NC, at Luma Dental Studio
Why Tooth Extractions Are Sometimes Necessary
Our dental practice advises extractions when root canal or other restorative treatments can no longer save a tooth. This tooth will be a problem for your oral health; therefore, removing it before it leads to further infections is preferable. You may also require extraction for the following reasons:
- Impacted wisdom tooth
- Badly decaying teeth
- Broken or shattered teeth below the gum line
- Loose tooth because of gum disease
- Overcrowded teeth arch
- A baby tooth that hinders the permanent tooth from erupting
A tooth extraction will help improve your oral health in all of these cases. Before the procedure, our dentist will clearly explain your dental condition and why tooth removal is necessary. You can trust Dr. Chi to carry out extractions in our office in a relaxing, safe, and comfortable manner.
What Happens in a Tooth Extraction Procedure?
First, Dr. Chi will assess whether you require an extraction through examination. She may also take an X-ray of the tooth in question to help determine whether an extraction is necessary.
If tooth removal is needed, Dr. Chi will review our sedation options with you. Then she will give the sedative of your choice and inject anesthesia around the tooth. Once you feel comfortable and relaxed, she will loosen and extract the tooth. Afterward, the dentist will have you bite down on the gauze or stitch the gums to stop the bleeding.
We will take you to a recovery room if you are under sedation so that you can wake up completely. If you are under general anesthesia, you should be taken home by a friend or family member. We will give you essential aftercare recommendations and strongly advise you to follow them.
Transitional Dentures
Also known as immediate dentures, transitional dentures are temporary prosthetic teeth placed on the same day natural teeth are removed. They are often recommended when multiple teeth must be extracted due to decay, gum disease, or trauma, but the patient does not want to go without teeth during the healing process. Transitional dentures help maintain appearance, support facial structure, and allow for basic chewing and speaking while the gums and bone remodel after extractions. They also serve as a protective “bandage” over the surgical sites, helping provide comfort during the initial healing phase.
The process typically begins with impressions and measurements taken before the teeth are removed. The denture is custom-fabricated in advance so it can be inserted immediately after extractions. As the gums heal and swelling decreases over the next several months, adjustments and relines are often needed to maintain a proper fit. Once healing is complete—usually around 3–6 months—a final, more permanent denture or implant-supported restoration can be fabricated for optimal comfort, function, and aesthetics.
